Despite living in Texas for most of my life I had never owned a pair of boots. Somehow in the midst of my life changing and rearranging boots became a symbol of the new life I was facing. I talked about them, looked at them, but could not spend the money for them. I think to finally get me quit talking about them, my parents gave me money for Christmas to buy my boots. Several days later an entourage made up of family and friends went to a highly recommended boot store to help me pick out a new pair of boots. After trying on many pairs I finely picked out a pair of brown leather Old Gringo boots with turquoise stitching. They were gorgeous and felt so good on my feet.
Throughout my divorce recovery class I wore my boots. They were comfortable and they gave me comfort. They came to symbolize my walk from one chapter to another in the book of my life. The new friends came to believe that I never wore anything other than my boots.
As spring came to the hill country I was ready to send out a change of address and life update to my old friends. On the front of the card was a picture of my boots in a field of bluebonnets with lyrics from the song New Boots by Shake Russell. “I’m walking in new boots down a brand new highway”.
And so it is almost a year later as I wear my boots I continue to walk on that new highway of life. They have taken me places I never thought possible when I bought them. Tonight they are taking me out with a group of extraordinary women as I proceed to journey on the highway that is life.

Those boots you wore to class ARE sweet! I now have my own pair of sweet boots and am loving them. I walk with confidence and spunk and feel great with them on my feet. Thanks for your inspiration! Hope to see you soon!
